Survivor 04:33
Ooh, he left me Didn't even say goodbye Wrote me a letter I found it by my bedside As I read it Tears swelled up in my eyes He said, baby, baby Don't you realize that [CHORUS] You're a survivor You'll work it out And you'll carry on You're a survivor, baby Yeah, you're like a child As the shades are drawn As the shades are drawn He wrote you can handle this life Me, I'm not that strong I need something else For me to hold on Well, I thought what makes him Think that I, I have the answer Oh, I'm just a dancer I'm taking all the chances Oh, I'm just a dancer But he wrote [Repeat CHORUS] Well, sure my act is tough enough When it's only when he's beside me (When he's beside you, girl Taking your heart to another world) If you look good a little closer now Well, it's a little girl inside me (Little girl inside you) oh, oh Baby, baby, come back Can't you understand I can't stop getting scared sometimes Anymore than you can You got to hang on You got to hang on Why can't we face it together I'm gonna tell the ledger That soon I'll be better I'm gonna burn up the letter Because now [Repeat CHORUS] We are survivors Oh, baby, baby, baby You're a survivor, baby, yeah...

Don't mind me I'm half crazy about you And I don't mean to doubt you But, oooo, I got an anxious heart You've been gone So damn long that it seems I've fallen for a bad dream I guess I got an anxious heart Chorus: Put me away Tell me I don't deserve you Well, you ain't got the nerve to I don't mind the times you lied It's alright Just come home to me tonight And take away my anxious heart Repeat Chorus Please take away my anxious heart...

Desire Wire 04:26
Is this day wasted Or am I just feeling blue The rain keeps falling And I just keep missing you Got disconnected As I tried to overcome Losing your number Was the worst I could've done So won't you call on my Desire Wire I got to get a message to you To get me on the line So I can tell you that I love you still And I need you to be mine I know I hurt you, yeah Well, I stepped right out of line But it's not fair If you won't let me apologize Babe, you got to call on my Desire Wire I got to get a message to you To get me on the line So I can tell you that I love you still And I need you to be mine I've been everywhere Searching for your number There's no place left to look It's a mystery I can only pray That you'll let me get back on the hook Honey, I'm just about to go insane If I don't talk to you My tears are gonna fall like the rain You got to call on my Desire Wire I got to get a message to you To get me on the line So I can tell you that I love you still And I need you to be mine

You, I've had my fill of your arrangements The way you make me fit into your life And I don't need to be an obligation A bill for useless phone calls in the night Chorus: I don't want your time and charges 'Cause I don't measure up love that way Keep looking for your deals and bargains But, hey That kind of love don't pay You, I think you took me for a ride I gave you my love never thinking twice Now when you give your love You make think it's qualified You make me feel your presence has a price Repeat Chorus

I was at the dance till late that night Everything was feeling alright I was there with all of my friends Suddenly right out of the blue Well, this little boy said "I've heard about you. They say you're the best dancer in this school!" He said, "Baby, do you want to dance?" He said, "I'm gonna let you take this chance" He said, "I better warn you in advance. You could lose it." He said, "I don't mean to put you down But I got the quickest feet in town And I'm gonna burn this dance hall down I can prove it." I said, "Darling, don't you worry about me I got the steps down 1-2-3 You've never seen me move my feet Well, I've made high school history." He laughed. Now this is hard to believe This little boy thinks he's better than me Well, out on the floor And we'll just see who can move it High school history (Girl, you better shake it or you'll never make it) High school history (Dancing situation all across the nation) High school history High school history That girl is going strong You know we didn't think she could last that long Shaking and a-shouting and a-carrying on She's gone, gone, gone High school history (Girl, you better shake it or you'll never make it) High school history (Dancing situation all across the nation) High school history High school history Well, the gym was getting mighty hot We both were giving everything we got You know we danced till a quarter to three The rest is high school history He cried, "I've never seen a girl so fine You got the boogie down and I resign Now I'm only hoping that you'll be mine. I can't lose you." High school history (Girl, you better shake it or you'll never make it) High school history (Dancing situation all across the nation) High school history High school history

I should have seen it in your eyes But you still took me by surprise Then it stung me like a shot Well, here I am and I've been caught Baby, you are tearing me apart Baby, you got mean in your heart Mean in your heart You told me love was on your mind But you're just not the loving kind Well, all I want is some affection But instead I need protection Baby, you are tearing me apart Baby, you got mean in your heart Mean in your heart You were left without one inside It must hurt to be so denied Can't you feel it? Heart. Now it's clear that you're after mine I can't lay my heart on the line You might steal it You're so mean, mean in your heart I should have seen it in your eyes But you still took me by surprise Then it stung me like a shot Well, here I am and I've been caught Baby, you are tearing me apart Baby, you got mean in your heart Mean in your heart

Hot Tears 03:31
Pretty darling Ain't you ever cried before? You know the pain that comes When you're hurting so I'm fighting back the tears To be strong I know I've been holding out For too damn long Here they come Hot tears burning my eyes Hot tears of fire Hot tears breaking my heart Please don't make me cry Such emotion seems so hard to bear For me to show myself is something rare But I have loved you now, oh, endlessly You, you You have got to keep me back from my misery And those hot tears burning my eyes Hot tears of fire Hot tears breaking my heart Please don't make me cry Please don't make me cry...

Only a fraction away From feeling something real Could this be another chance? I got the impression That you had the better of me Though I never dared to dance Now I'm knee deep in love Knee deep in love Knee deep in love Knee deep in love I need your sweet arms to hold me so tight And time will take the pain away I never knew it would be so hard to make it on my own Let me love you for one more day Knee deep in love Knee deep in love Knee deep in love Knee deep in love Try to understand That my hope for the future's in another man's hands And I got down on my knees Begging please, baby Won't you comfort me? I've been down on my knees I've been down on my knees I've been down on my knees I've been down on my knees Knee deep in love...

I was wondering what the hell was wrong I've been holding back far too long I got so much inside me With my music to guide me I know I'm gonna come on strong I'm finally rocking Finally rocking Finally rocking Was a time when I just couldn't see Anything outside of me Temporarily blinded I was so narrow minded I thought happiness would come for free But now I'm rocking No more talking Finally rocking Everybody hear my song You've been holding back far too long Get the music behind you Let your loving remind you That there really isn't anything wrong As long as you're rocking Finally rocking Finally rocking

about

This is Cindy Bullens' first solo album from 1978. She started as a back-up singer for Elton John and toured with him several times. She then was featured on the Grease soundtrack performing several songs that won her an Grammy nomination. Desire Wire is an album that reflects many of her Grease roots as a singer/songwriter and
a soulful rock icon. This collection of songs has more hooks than a fisherman's cap. There are several hard rockin' tunes, i.e. Survivor, High School History, and Finally Rockin' most noticeably. The other songs are slower but are real heart-string tuggers, i.e. Desire Wire, Knee Deep In Love. This album gained her another Grammy nomination. Her next two albums echoed the feel of Desire Wire and were released in 1981 and 1986, both are great, if
you can find them. Neither has been issued on CD to my knowledge. Her albums after that are more folk than rock and her new group, The Refugees, while very good, are just not my style. If you like rock from the late seventies, pick up this hidden diamond for your enjoyment!

As allmusic.com and vinylhistory.com once said:

One of the great lost rock albums of the '70s, Bullens' debut release is full of tough, passionate, incredibly catchy rock & roll played to the hilt and sung with fire. Bullens followed it up with Steal the Night in 1979. Ten years later, she made Cindy Bullens, and they're almost as good, although no one noticed. So life is unfair. Search those used-record stores for any of them.

Bullens has the heart and soul of a straight ahead no-nonsense female rocker. She writes good songs, sings well, and can open up on guitar, the few times she has a chance.

This album suffered for two reasons.
Number one, the producers made a mess of the entire proceedings. They were clueless about what to do with her, so rather than let her be herself they decided to get in there and really produce!
Number two, the record company managed to lock Bullens in the cellar, and forget she was there. "Desire Wire" should have been a hit!

Despite all this incompetence, it's not a bad debut, but it could have been much more.
